HBO Asia's First Kungfu Flicks Are A Snooze

Corey Yuen’s HBO kungfu flicks are disappointing.

HBO Asia Original’s first Mandarin TV movies, Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So and Master of the Shadowless Kick: Wong Kei-Ying (above), are major snoozers.

Co-produced by China Movie Channel, both flicks — Qing Dynasty-set tales about righteous dudes battling corrupt officials with mythical kungfu styles — feature charisma-free leads, overcooked plots and woefully unspectacular action.

Revered action choreographer Corey Yuen has an EP credit but we wonder if his involvement was limited to just cashing the cheque.

They’re just as awful as Netflix’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. But as risible as the latter was, it had at least some cinematic plushness. Drunken Fist and Shadowless Kick, on the other hand, look like shoddy HK-TVB productions from the ‘90s. (Photo: HBO)
