British talk show host Graham Norton recently went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his debut novel, Holding. The two also swapped notes on hosting tips.
Once they got over the awkwardness of one talk show host interviewing another (“It’s like a meatless white bread sandwich — there’s nothing here,” says Norton), Colbert asked his British counterpart for the secret to getting his guests to open up. Alcohol, said Norton.
“If you come out, and there’s a cocktail waiting for you, you immediately think, ‘This might be a nice time’!” Norton also has a fail-safe arrangement for difficult guests by having them on the show at the same time. He says: “Most [guests] have a wanting to be liked, a wanting-to-show-off gene, and that gene is strong within them. If somebody isn’t talking, [the others would] think: ‘I’ll talk!’”
