ASK THE 8 GURU
YOUR BURNING QUESTION

Do We Really Need A 'Marvel's The Defenders' Mini-Series?

Why can't they just make a movie?

Finally, we have Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and, er, Iron Fist (Finn Jones, still charisma-free, sporting a less curly perm) ganging up — as The Defenders — to save their beloved city from a sinister sect (led by Sigourney Weaver), but does the all-star jamboree really need to span eight episodes?

That’s way too long. So much so that pacing is off, and by the time the quartet get together at the end of Ep 3, it’s more exhausting than exciting. They can benefit from a shorter, tighter and more focused narrative.

C’mon, they already have their origin stories told, so why not just cut straight to the chase? The showrunners should’ve turned the team-up into an Avengers-type movie. Or look at how The CW pulled off their mash-up of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow — swift, painless and satisfying.

Well, at least there's a ‘cameo’ by Anthony Wong. Just kidding, but the Hongkong actor does appear in the hilarious promo for the show, available on Netflix’s Facebook page.

In the two-and-a-half minute long clip, which plays like something out of a Johnnie To movie, The Sleep Curse star plays a troubled triad boss whose businesses have been disrupted by someone “who moves like a devil in the shadows”, a guy “whose fist glows like fire”, a “harmless girl" who took out 10 of his men, and “a bulletproof man”.

The Defenders in Hongkong? It sounds like a great idea.
