Bravo to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow for introducing TV’s first Muslim superhero. In the ep ‘Zari’, the time-travelling Legends arrive in 2042 where they meet a hacker named Zari Adrianna Tomaz, the first Muslim-American superhero played by Iranian-born actress Tala Ashe (Smash).
Zari isn’t a new character — she’s based on a ‘70s DC superhero named Isis, who gets her powers from an ancient Egyptian amulet. But executive producer Marc Guggenheim also drew inspiration for Zari from his Muslim sister-in-law who’s grappling with life under President Donald Trump.
“Audiences and creatives are gravitating toward superheroes because it’s wish-fulfillment,” said Guggenheim. “They’re looking to find a little bit of hope and a little bit of escapism that quite frankly doesn’t exist.” Your move next, Marvel TV.
