You Can Go Glamping At This Upcoming Music Festival. Could This Be Singapore’s Answer To Coachella?

Music festivals in Singapore are usually quite straightforward. Go for gig, then battle the crowds on the MRT/taxi queue to go home. Some lucky ones will book hotel rooms nearby to crash (oh, those ZoukOut memories). Repeat for as many days as said fest is on.

All this may just change in a couple of weeks, when the Skechers Sundown Festival takes over Siloso Beach at Sentosa from April 19 to 21. You see, besides hauling in over 50 artists to perform across three stages on the beach, the music festival has taken a leaf out of Coachella’s books and introduced (possibly for the first time in Singapore) glamping at a music festival.

Months after we visited the upper floor following reports of shuttered shops and sparse foot traffic, we returned on a Friday afternoon to see whether things had changed. This time, Level 2 had noticeably more people around, from teenagers and tourists to older shoppers. More importantly, shoppers were actually interacting with the stalls, trying things on and making purchases, rather than simply browsing and walking through. There are still plenty of shuttered units, and Level 2 remains much quieter than the ever-busy ground floor, but the atmosphere felt noticeably livelier during our visit. Bugis Street is also hosting its “Somewhere @ Bugis Street” weekend events as part of its ongoing efforts to bring more activity to the area.
