The Grammy award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducteers and Napster-hating Monsters of Rock return with their latest show on Jan 22. They'll be playing tunes from their latest album, Hardwired...to Self-Destruct as well as their classics. It’s their third time here; they played before in 1993 and 2013. (One more tour here and we'll name a road named after them. Kidding. But it's a good idea, right?) Here are some fascinating stuff about the band.

Metallica's Hardwired...to Self-Destruct

6

No. of Metallica albums that have topped the Billboard 200 chart. The heavy metal giant’s latest, Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, became their sixth consecutive No. 1 album when it debuted on Nov 18.

57

No. of countries Hardwired…to Self-Destruct topped the charts. It scored 74/100 on Metacritic list.

11.5 million

No. of YouTube views of Metallica performing ‘Enter Sandman’ with classroom instruments on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

1982

The year Metallica made its first appearance on an album. Their song ‘Hit the Lights’ was on the compilation record Metal Massacre Vol. 1, but their name was misspelled as ‘Mettallica’. D’oh!

16 million+

No. of copies Metallica’s self-titled album (also known as The Black Album) has sold since its 1991 debut. Today, it’s still moving an average of 5,000 copies a week. You can’t call yourself a metal-head unless you own one.

2

No. of cosmetic brands Metallica has sued before. In 1999, the group filed a lawsuit against Victoria’s Secret for using its moniker for a line of lip pencils. (The case was settled out of court.) A year later, French perfume maker Guerlain was served letters for using the band’s name for a women’s fragrance. (It was later renamed Metalys.)

300

No. of penguins who ‘listened’ to Metallica. In 2013, the group thrilled 120 scientists and winners of a Coca-Cola Zero contest and “300 curious penguins” in a transparent dome at Carlini Base, a research facility in Antarctica. They also set a Guinness World Record for being the first musical act to perform a concert on every continent.

24

No. of pages reportedly in Metallica’s tour rider (aka requests) for its 2004 tour. It stipulated that bacon must be available at every meal of the day. Other demands include: hot breakfast for 100 people, a US$5 million insurance policy, and all beverages to be placed in coolers (“please no Styrofoam”).

Jan 22, the Indoor Stadium. Tix from Sistic.
