Huat To Do At Isetan’s Summer Festival At Northpoint City

Forget that urban myth about Yishun being Singapore’s scariest town. Based on its heritage, we’ll wager that it is Singapore’s most huat district.

Home to Singapore’s pineapple plantations over a century ago, Yishun is named after the owner, Mr Lim Nee Soon aka “The Pineapple King”. He was so influential that locals called the area Nee Soon, which was later renamed to Yishun.

Paying tribute to the town of Ong Lye (Hokkien for pineapple), Northpoint City is hosting the popular Isetan’s Summer Festival from Aug 25 to Sep 6, with a pineapple twist.

Don’t miss popular Japanese street food such as the super cute Kumamon Bear Pancake ($5), Takoyaki in assorted flavours ($10-$12/packet of 6), and Braised and deep-fried seafood ($10.50 - $11.50 per 100g).

Take a sip of Matcha Latte ($8) or get happily tipsy on Fruits Liqueur in assorted flavours ($58 per bottle). End on a sweet note with a Honey Soft Serve Ice Cream ($7).

Isetan has also specially curated pineapple-themed snacks in collaboration with their Japanese vendors. Here are 4 yummy Ong Lye-nised treats to try, which are exclusively available only at Isetan’s Summer Festival Northpoint City.

#1: Warabi Manjyu pineapple at Bashodo, 3 for $10.50

Obsessed with the boing-boing texture of warabi? So are we. Sink your teeth into these adorable orbs that look like jiggly egg yolks.

#2: Coconut Pineapple Canele at Gourtens Gourmet, $5.50

With nutty and fruity notes from the coconut and pineapple, this is a refreshing take on the usual Canele. Plus, we love that these tropical treats look like little bursts of sunshine.

#3: Pineapple Brown Sugar Steamed Cake at Taimatsu, $4.50

We never thought we’d see the day when a Japanese steamed cake (aka Huat Kueh?) is flavoured with slices of pineapple! If you like your baked goods sweet and sour, make a beeline for this. 

#4: Cut Pineapple at Tokio Fruits, $15 for 1 packet; $20 for 2 packets

Prefer to keep things OG? Enjoy the pineapple in its simplest form and tuck into a packet (or two) of the juicy fruit.
