You can't take your pet to the vet unless it's an emergency or for a non-elective procedure.

Veterinary services are considered essential, so vet clinics in Singapore remain open even as circuit-breaker measures are in place. However, vets are only allowed to see to emergency and non-elective cases, including hospitalisation.

But just because your furkid’s condition isn’t classified by the Animal and Veterinary Services’ (AVS) as an emergency or a non-elective procedure, doesn’t mean it has to stay untreated the whole month. For mild conditions, may we suggest seeing the vet... from the comfort of your home.

Several vets in Singapore have launched telemedicine services, with some in operation even before the Covid-19 pandemic. These online vet consultations are done by AVS-registered vets who assess and diagnose your pet’s condition remotely via video call. Medicine is prescribed and delivered if necessary. And you don’t even have to leave your house. Perfect for circuit breaker month.

One of them is Zumvet. The digital pet healthcare platform which connects a network of vets in Singapore and clients via video consults was set up last October. “AVS has recommended that for all non-urgent, elective cases, where possible, to have them resolved via teleconsultation instead,” Zumvet co-founder Dr Grace Su explains. “Our vets are able to review non-urgent cases, or cases where pet owners require top-up of chronic medications. This is because there will be no physical contact.”

Vetpal, which began operations last September as a housecall service, has pivoted its operations to focus on teleconsultations, ever since tightened safe distancing measures commenced on Apr 7. “To safeguard the wellbeing of the team and pet owners, we had to make the difficult but responsible decision to suspend our core housecall services. During this period of uncertainty, telehealth services allow pet owners to access veterinary opinion while ensuring everyone remains safe,” Vetpal co-founder Dr Camellia Leong tells 8Days.sg.

Pets Avenue Veterinary Clinic, which has two outlets at Farrer Road and Jalan Jurong Kechil, has been around for five years, and started offering telemedicine services about eight months ago. “As long as you are veterinarian registered with AVS you can perform teleconsultations,” says Dr Genevieve Zhang of Pets Avenue.
