The Hungry Ghost Festival, aka the seventh month of the lunar calendar, starts today (Aug 1). According to Chinese beliefs, this is when the gates of hell are open and spirits get to roam the land of the living for an entire month. This year, it spans from Aug 1 to 29. The Seventh Month is usually associated with a few things: spirits, burning offerings, getais…and our mothers and grandmothers reminding us about the multitude of superstitions surrounding the Hungry Ghost Festival.
