4 Things To Do This Weekend (May 4 to 6)

Star Wars Day festivities go beyond just May 4 (Fri) because, well, there’s work. But fans can be rest assured there’ll be plenty of activities over this two-day fest, including costume fan appearances and movie screenings. You’ll get to meet the roving R2-KT, a pink droid custom-built by super-fan Albin Johnson that has made an appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It will roam the grounds on May 4 from 4pm and on May 5 from 2pm. Catch performances by Dark Empire, our very own Star Wars tribute band, and gawk at collector’s items on display (there are gems that date back all the way from 1977, when the world was first introduced to the galaxy far, far away. It all culminates in the Star Wars Run (May 5), where participants choose to join the Rebellion on the Light Side or go over to the Dark Side. Okay, it’s just a matter of choosing from two different routes for the night run, but you’ll get a very different experiences and, er, encounters on each one, okay?

It doesn’t matter if you’re on Camp Mixologist or Camp Bartender, you’ll be in high spirits at the Singapore Cocktail Festival, regardless of what you call the people whipping up delicious cocktails all weekend. Booze it up at the 25 bar pop-ups by bars like Nutmeg and Clove and hot new fave Caffe Fernet, or go tasting artisanal spirits from around the world. There’ll also be guest shifts by bartenders from Bangkok and Beijing to Seoul and Singapore. Put on your dancing shoes and shuffle along at a silent disco on May 4 and 5 or a live DJ set on May 6. Stick around for the Asia Bar Battle on May 6 where teams duke it out with their speed, inventive cocktails and mystery ingredient challenges (step aside MasterChef, this is a job for a MasterBartender.)

Can’t make it to the Amsterdam for tulip season? Walk among tulips and giants at Tulipmania at Gardens by the Bay. Yes, you read right — besides 90,000 tulips of over 40 varieties, there is a family of giants among the colourful floral swarms at the whimsical town that Gardens by the Bay has morphed into. Needless to say, this is great for the ’gram. Free guided tours (on a first-come-first-served basis) and a cupcake workshop ($95 per pax, includes admission to the Flower Dome, May 5, 2pm to 5pm) are also available.

Well-to-do Peranakans were among the first in Southeast Asia to have their photos taken when photography first arrived in Southeast Asia in the 1840s. We get that it may be hard to imagine in this day and age when it only takes a split second to take a pic on your phone of anyone and anything, so traipse over to the Peranakan Museum to see for yourself how technology changed lives over 100 years ago. The Amek Gambar exhibition shines a spotlight on the evolution of photography through the eyes of the Peranakan community from the mid-19th century till today, with the oldest photo of a Peranakan — and also the oldest photo on paper in the Singapore National Collection — on display.
