Star Search 2019 winner Zhang Zetong and The Good Fight’s Tay Ying will play a couple in the upcoming Mediacorp English drama series Slow Dancing.
Slow Dancing is based on the best-selling e-book by Singaporean writer Noelle (@Hepburnettes), and is produced under Mediacorp’s 'Lights. Camera. Singapore’ banner, an initiative which champions homegrown content across mediums like movies, musicals and books.
The story concerns Isla Chang (Tay Ying), a young woman who’s infatuated with Kaden Leung (Zhang Zetong), a blind billionaire she’s looking after. Things get complicated when Isla pretends to be Kaden’s girlfriend whom he doesn’t know is killed in the same car accident that left him visually impaired.
The six-part half-hour series also stars Gurmit Singh, Hossan Leong, and Eelyn Kok. Slow Dancing marks the English drama debut for Zetong; Tay Ying, whose parents are actors Zheng Geping and Hong Huifang, has appeared in the Pierre Png-Rebecca Lim-led Channel 5 mystery Missing.
Since its e-publication in 2015, Slow Dancing has attracted more than 10.3 million reads on wattpad. Production is slated to start next month. The show will premiere on Channel 5 and meWATCH in January 2021.
Slow Dancing isn’t the only local book making the leap from page to screen. Adrian Tan’s iconic 1988 novel The Teenage Textbook is also being adapted as a series, starring Chen Yi Xin, Victory Lap’s Gavin Teo, and 987 DJ Chris Mak. Shooting is expected to start next week; the series is due out in April 2021. Tan’s book was previously made into a 1998 movie with Melody Chen, Caleb Goh and Randall Tan.
