Why Does The Title Of The New James Bond Movie Sound Like The Story Of Every Stressed Singaporean?

While some folks are trying to wrap their heads around a Marvel Cinematic Universe without Spider-Man (Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios — please work it out), another group is having a (thunder)ball poking fun at the just-announced moniker of the new James Bond flick, No Time to Die.

Reactions have been mixed so far. Some say No Time to Die sounds classy, while others think it’s a riff on other Bond titles with the word ‘die’ (Live and Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day). For a second, I thought it’s the follow-up to John Grisham’s A Time to Kill. Oh, never mind.

And because the 25th Bond movie, currently in production under the aegis of Gary Joji Fukunaga, is Daniel Craig’s final outing as the British spy, there’s speculation that 007 may encounter a slight case of death a la Wolverine in Logan and Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.

But some Singaporeans seem to think the title is referring to, well, them — us. On his Facebook page, blogger Mr Brown (aka Lee Kin Mun) writes, “The new James Bond movie is called Ai Si Poon Boh Eng. Which is also the story of a Singaporean’s work life.” Come to think of it, No Time to Die is one ‘lah’ away from becoming a Jack Neo movie.

No Time to Die, opening here Apr 9, also stars Rami Malek, Christoph Waltz, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, and Léa Seydoux. Here, we round up some of the jokes inspired by the title. Meanwhile, good luck to whoever is writing lyrics for the theme song that rhyme with the title.
