Trailer Watch: Aaron Kwok Goes Head-To-Head With Tony Leung In Crime Thriller Where The Wind Blows

The decades-spanning Hong Kong crime epic was supposed to come back way back… in 2018. Better late than never, right?

Where The Wind Blows, the highly-anticipated Hong Kong crime thriller that marks the first time pairing of Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, finally sees the light of day after a five-year wait.

Directed by Philip Yung (Port of Call), the film — which used to be called Theory of Ambitions (sounds like a movie about mathematics, no?) — is an epic saga about the rise of two rogue cops (Kwok and Leung) with strong triad connections in the 1960s and their fall from grace in the 1970s when their illicit activities are put to the end by the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The movie, which reportedly cost about US$38 million (S$50 mil), also stars Patrick Tam, Michael Chow, Du Juan, and Michael Hui.

It’s set to drop in cinemas on Feb 16.

The film’s release has been a long time coming. It was supposed to be out in end-2018 but was delayed by China’s National Radio and Television Administration, which had issues with the film’s depiction of police corruption and organised crime gangs.

Cue to April 2021. It was slated to make its world premiere at the 45th Hong Kong International Film Festival, but the screening was pulled by the producers over “technical” reasons. (In China, “technical reasons” is often used as a euphemism for censorship. Oh no.)

The movie eventually premiered in August 2022 at the 46th HKIFF.

Where The Wind Blows is vying for three categories at next month’s 16th Asian Film Awards: Best Actor (Leung), Best Supporting Actor (Hui) and Best Production Design.
