My Classmate's Secret Life: Lv Jia Ying and Kiki Lim (Photo: Mediacorp)

My Classmate’s Secret Life (Mediacorp Microdrama TikTok Channel, Sept 19)

The 60-episode microdrama series stars Star Search 2024 finalist Lv Jia Ying  as a uni student who leads a double life as — holy Mothership! — a social escort. Things get complicated when she finds herself competing with her BFF (Kiki Lim) for a scholarship.

Neagley: Maria Sten (Photo: Prime Video)

Neagley (Prime Video, Sept 16)

The Reacher spin-off starring Maria Sten, reprising her fan-fave role as a private eye and former protégé of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) back in his MP days. In this eight-ep series, she puts her special skills to good use investigating her friend’s ‘suspicious’ death — and uncovers a conspiracy along the way. Yes, Reacher will drop in to say hi.

Old Horses: Gary Lowden and Gary Oldman (Photo: Apple TV)

Slow Horses, Season 6 (Apple TV, Sept 16)

Gary Oldman returns as grumpy MI5 chief Jackson Lamb, leading his team of misfit agents — including James Bond contender Jack Lowden —  on another mission to save the world. Or rather, themselves: this time, they’re being hunted by a pair of assassins (Kyle Soller and MyAnna Buring). But the good news is… Sid (Olivia Cooke) is back from the dead! So we grieved for nothing?!

The Fixers: Christopher Lee (Photos: Netflix)

The Fixers (Netflix, Sept 17)

Christopher Lee stars in this 10-part Taiwanese action-comedy as Felix, a washed-up gangster working as a troubleshooter for high-profile clients from both sides of the law. (Young actors: aren’t you jealous of the kind of roles Christopher is getting overseas?) Shou Lou and Regina Lei play Felix’s fellow Michael Claytons, all operating in plain sight from a centuries-old temple. Working in morally murky waters under the watchful eye of deities — how do they sleep at night? The pay better be good.

Plastic Beauty: Mayu Matsuoka and Riisa Naka (Photo: Netflix)

Plastic Beauty (Netflix, Sept 17)

Set against the backdrop of Japan’s aesthetic medicine industry (reportedly worth US$3.88 billion or S$4.9 bil), this eight-part Japanese drama starring Mayu Matsuoka (Shoplifters) as a disgraced physician who gets a second chance working at a cosmetic surgery clinic. There, she clashes with its resident specialist (Alice in Borderland’s Riisa Naka) over where medicine ends and beauty begins. Are you prepared to see how the sausage is made in the sausage factory?

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story: Ella Beatty and Charlie Hunnam (Photos: Sally Montana, Netflix)

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story (Netflix, Sept 17)

The fourth entry in Ryan Murphy’s true-crime anthology series is also the first to feature a female protagonist — Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty, the daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning), the high-society debutante who was acquitted of murdering her father (Charlie Hunnam) and stepmother (Rebecca Hall) in 1892. If the past Monster instalments are anything go by, this season will lead to a.) piss-offed descendants of Lizzie Borden, b.) historians calling out inaccuracies, and, however unlikely, c.) a resurgence of Lizzy Borden on Spotify.

Captive (Cautiva):  Carolina Kopelioff and Lorena Vega (Photo: HBO Max)

Captive (Cautiva) (HBO Max, Sept 19)

From 19th-century New England, we head to present-day Argentina with this bound-to-be-controversial thriller about a young woman (Carolina Kopelioff) who enters a cloistered convent, where she faces 15 years of abuse, torture, and unlawful detention at the hands of the Mother Superior (Lorena Vega). Based on a true story.
