The Cellphone Swap (mewatch, Sep 15; Channel 8, Sep 18, 9pm)

This 10-part romantic dramedy stars Kendra Sow as a nerd and Star Seach 2024 second-runner up Jona Chung — the private swimming coach with the perpetual blur-meets-lost puppy look (perfect casting!) — as a jock. Their lives get turned inside out when they accidentally swapped phones. Classic meet-cute! Star Search 2019 finalist Zhai Siming co-stars the girl’s brother and the guy’s water polo rival.

Find me A Singaporean: The World’s My Stage (mewatch & Channel 8, Sept 18, 8pm)

Michelle Chia jets to Mae Sot, a Thai-Myanmar border town, to meet Dr Tiah Ling, a former A&E physician who traded city life for a nomadic mission: providing healthcare for displaced communities.

Elio (Disney+, Sep 17)

Pixar’s latest — co-directed by Turning Red’s Domee Shi) — follows an alien-obsessed boy (Yonas Kibreab) who is mistaken for Earth’s leader when he’s transported to a planet far, far away. There, he helps his newfound pals (Zoe Saldana, Brad Garrett, Jamella Jamil, et al) to navigate an intergalactic crisis. A box-office flop, perhaps it’ll find a warmer welcome on streaming.

Gen V, Season 2 (Prime Video, Sep 17)

While we await the final season of The Boys, here’s a little something to tide us over. Gen V Season 2 picks up after the chaos of The Boys Season 4 — Homelander is in the White House, martial law’s in full swing, and the world’s in meltdown. Back at Godolkin University, a new dean (Hamish Linklater) promises to supercharge the next generation of supes. The season kicks off with a three-episode premiere.

The Morning Show, Season 4 (Apple TV+, Sep 17)

These are trying times for news organisations, but hey, enough with real life problems. Season 4 is set two years after the UBA-NBN merger. The newsroom faces new responsibilities, hidden agendas, and the slippery concept of truth in a world of deepfakes, conspiracies, and corporate cover-ups (wait, are we sure this isn’t real life?). Regulars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Duplass, Greta Lee, and Billy Crudup are joined by Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Aaron Pierre, Boyd Holbrook, and William Jackson Harper.

Black Rabbit (Netflix, Sep 18)

If The Bear is your poison, Black Rabbit might be too. In this eight-part crime thriller, Jude Law plays New York bar-restaurant owner Jake whose world flips when his brother Vince (Jason Bateman), a trouble-magnet knee-deep in debt, shows up on his doorstep. But Jake’s got problems of his own… like figuring out how they’re going to pay for any of it.

The Reluctant Traveller with Eugene Levy, Season 3 (Apple TV+, Sep 19)

By Season 3, Jim’s Dad has gone from Reluctant Traveller to, well, Avid Traveller (we think). This time, the Schitt’s Creek star treks through Austria, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Mexico, South Korea, and the US (guess he wasn't keen about Singapore) — with some famous travel buddies in tow: the Prince of Wales, Michael Bublé, daughter (and Schitt’s Creek co-star) Sarah Levy, K-pop group NOWZ, Eric Name, cricket legends Rahul Dravid and Jofra Archer.

Black Rabbit (HBO Max, Sep 20)

Nothing to do with Black Rabbit. Steven Soderbergh’s second of three films this year (after Presence, with The Christophers just bowing at the Toronto International Film Festival). Michael Fassbender plays George, a bespectacled spycatcher (unlike one famous John Carre character) who suspects his wife (Cate Blanchett) — also a spy — is a traitor. Expects fireworks, not from explosions, but from the badass ensemble (which also includes Pierce Brosnan, Naomie Harris, Rege-Jean Page, and Marisa Abela) chewing scenery.
