Between Steps: Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun (Photo: Disney+)

Between Steps (Disney+, Oct 5)

What happens when an introverted athlete-turned-lecturer (Head over Heels’ Choo Young-woo) meets cute with a feisty clothing and textiles student (Love Alarm’s Kim Sohyun) at a university robotics lab? Fireworks, baby! Okay, maybe not in the beginning. You know how these Korean rom-coms go. Give the mismatched couple 12 episodes to figure things out. New episodes every Monday and Tuesday.

Doctor X: Mafia in White: Kim Ji-won (Photos: Netflix)

Doctor X: Mafia in White (Netflix, Oct 9)

Queen of Tears’ Kim Ji-won stars as a maverick surgeon who has an annoying habit of not giving a flying toss about the chain of command and doing things her own way, much to the chagrin of her employers. This is a Korean redo of the long-running Ryoko Yonekura-led Japanese series, which spanned seven seasons, one TV special, and a feature film. Wonder if this version has its own memorable theme music. New episodes every Friday and Saturday.

Ghost in the Cell (Netflix, Oct 5)

The Shawshank Redemption meets Hellraiser. That’s the vibe of Indonesian horror maestro Joko Anwar’s (Impetigore) Ghost in the Cell. The story follows inmates (played by Abimana Aryasatya, Dimas Danang Suryonegoro, Lukman Sardi, Mike Luccock, Yoga Pratama, and Endy Arfian) in a Jakarta prison — which happens to house ‘luxury villas’ — who must put their differences aside to survive the wrath of an evil spirit. Gory, but also absurdly funny.

Carrie: Summer H Howell (Photos: Prime Video)

Carrie (Prime Video, Oct 7)

Stephen King’s 1974 novel — his first — has already been turned into two movies, one tele-feature, and even a musical. What can Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House) possibly bring to the table with his eight-part series adaptation? As it turns out: plenty. Summer H Howell plays the title character, a misfit high-schooler who has to put up with her overprotective mother (Samantha Sloyan) and classmates who range from nice to some not-so-nice. By the way, did I forget to mention she has telekinetic powers. Better not mess with her. Oh, too late.

Below (Netflix, Oct 8)

Josh Hartnett, currently on the big screen with the erotic thriller Verity, headlines this six-part limited series about a fisherman battling a mysterious sea creature off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. With Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) plays his son, while Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) as the marine researcher trying to uncover the monster’s secrets. Judging from the trailer, it feels like a cross between Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and John Carpenter’s The Fog.

Animals: Kerry Washington and Ben Affleck (Photo: Warren Page/Netflix)

Animals (Netflix, Oct 9)

Ben Affleck stars, co-writes and directs this thriller in which he plays a Los Angeles mayoral candidate who’s forced to make morally dubious decisions when his son is kidnapped. Kerry Washington – she should know a thing or two about political chicanery – co-stars as his wife. The cast also includes Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun. By the way, this movie features a ton of AI — but Affleck assures us it’s ethically used.
