What to Watch This Week: June 8-14, 2026

FIFA World Cup 2026 (mewatch, from June 12 to July 20)

For the first time in FIFA history, the event is co-hosted by three countries — the US, Mexico and Canada. During this period, expect fewer blood donors, a productivity dip, high malingering… general slackness. If you’ve signed up for the FIFA World Cup 2026 subscription (at S$118), you can catch all 104 matches ‘live’ and on-demand via two dedicated channels. As for the others, fret not:  28 matches — including the opening match, 23 group stage matches, two semi-finals, 3rd/4th place match and the final – will be available for free on Channel 5 and simulcast on mewatch. From YES to I DO (mewatch, Channel 8, June 9, 8pm)

Viral Hit (Netflix, June 11)

Take a walk on the dark side of content creation in this Japanese series about a bullied and financially strapped high school student (Ōji Suzuka) who stumbles into a new money-making venture: live-streaming brawls. Based on a popular South Korean webtoon by Park Tae-jun and Kim Jung-hyun.

The Evil Lawyer (Netflix, June 11)

Lo and behold, Thailand’s first legal drama! The latest from Mad Unicorn creator Nottapon Boonprakob follows Mek (Nat Kitcharit), an idealistic lawyer framed for the murder of a police chief’s son. And the only person who can clear his name is a maverick attorney, Jittri (Rhatha Phongam), aka The Evil Lawyer — so called because she fights dirty, exploits loopholes, bends rules, and loves hitting below the belt. Oh yes, he’s in good hands. We think.

They Will Kill You (HBO Max, June 12)

Another movie that underperformed at the box office that might be better appreciated on streaming. This Kill Bill-esque supernatural actioner sees Zazie Beetz infiltrating a century-old hotel to rescue her estranged sister (Industry’s Myha’la). But this is no ordinary building: it’s a front for a satanic cult! The mayhem is off-the-charts insane. Best watched as a double bill with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (coming soon to Disney+). 

Hamnet (HBO Max, June 13)

Following her underappreciated Marvel detour (f*** you all haters, Eternals deserves better) Chloe Zhao returns to Earth with this historical drama about the love and loss that inspired William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It follows Will (Paul Mescal) and Agnes (Jessie Buckley, in an Oscar-winning turn) whose marriage hits the rocks after the death of their son, Hamnet. While grief drives them apart, it sparks Will’s creativity, leading him to write one of his most famous plays.
