The Season (Viu, June 17)

How much longer do we have to wait for the Crazy Rich Asians sequel? Our Magic 8-ball says: Very doubtful.  Until that happens we have this six-part The Season, a “rich people behaving badly” thriller set in the insular world of Hong Kong’s high-society summer of yacht jamborees and charity balls (oh yes, I can so relate to that.). Shadow and Bone’s Jessie Mei Li stars as a rookie associate trying to ingratiate herself with the Hexts  (Toby Stephens as the patriarch and Karena Lam as the matriarch), an old-money dynasty — and uncover some hidden truths linked to her past. Cue sinister music…and touristy money shots.

King & Prince: Our Meet-Up in LA (Disney, June 17)

And speaking of tourism… The Japanese pop duo Ren Nagase and Kaito Takahashi, aka King & Prince, headline this nine-part travelogue where they travelling around Los Angeles, visiting the sights, completing challenges, chatting, and unwinding. Each adventure gives audiences a glimpse into the duo’s working chemistry and personal friendship. For those — like yours truly — not planning to visit LA (or the US, for that matter) anytime soon (not in this political climate), this show is for you.

Sugar, Season 2 (Apple TV, June 19)

And speaking of Los Angeles…The neo-noir mystery series — with a sci-fi twist (has everyone recovered from that WTF reveal in Season 1?) returns. Private eye and cinephile John Sugar (Colin Farrell) “takes on another missing-person case, searching for the older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer,” so goes the logline. “As the investigation expands into a sinister, city-wide conspiracy, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question — how far will he go to do what’s right?” In other words, he wishes he’d taken the week off.

Husbands in Action (Netflix, June 19)

This should be fun: a Korean action-comedy starring Jin Seon-kyu and Gong Myoung, last seen together in Extreme Job (great, it got me thinking of fried chicken). When a woman (Kang Han-na) is kidnapped by a drug lord (Kim Ji-seok), it’s up to her ex-husband cop (Jin) and current husband veterinarian (Gong) to work together to save her. The movie, directed by Park Gyu-tae (6/45), also stars Lee Da-hee and Yoon Kyung-ho.

Ah Beng vs Liang Po Po (Netflix, June 20)

More kidnapping, this time in our backyard.The CNY hit sees Jack Neo in drag again as his iconic granny persona Liang Po Po who crosses the Causeway looking for work. She ends up embroiled with hot-tempered security guard Ah Beng (Jack Lim) whose daughter (Emerald Hill’s Ivory Chia) has been abducted by an organ-trafficking syndicate. It’s two cross-border comedy icons for the price of one, packed with plenty of Malaysia-vs-Singapore jabs — what’s not to like?
