Where the Heart Belongs (meWATCH, July 21)

Set in a future 'super-aged' society, this 15-part dramedy follows a new policy from the (fictional) Housing and Senior Affairs Board that lets citizens adopt the elderly. Denise Camillia Tan and Romeo Tan star as HSAB officers whose lives are turned upside down by their unexpected geriatric housemates. Zhu Houren, Xiang Yun, Kym Ng, and Aileen Tan co-star. 

Murder on the Menu (mewatch & Channel 8, July 23, 8pm)

Jeremy Chan is joined by food sleuths Ben Yeo (taking a break from his gazillion ventures?), and YES933’s Chen Ning and Zhu Zeliang to crack the case of ‘Cold Secrets, Barley Alive’.

The Indigenous (mewatch & Channel 8, July 24, 8pm)

Chen Ning (you again!) heads to Vietnam’s Yen Bai province to connect with the Black Thai community — and what better way to break the ice than with a dish of insect cuisine?

Washington Black (Disney+, July 23)

This eight-part limited series — adapted from Esi Edugyan’s bestselling novel — follows young Wash (Ernest Kingsley Jr), who escapes slavery on a Barbadian sugar plantation and embarks on a globe-trotting journey as the assistant to an eccentric inventor (Lucifer’s Tom Ellis). Sterling K Brown co-stars.

Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix, July 25)

Fish cake! Has it really been nearly three decades since the last movie? Believe it. Adam Sandler is back for more putting action as Happy Gilmore, teeing off with familiar faces (Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller) and fresh ones (Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley). What’s next? The Waterboy II? Netflix, you can do it!

Trigger (Netflix, July 25)

From Kwon Oh-seung, the writer-director of the serial killer thriller Midnight comes this 10-part K-drama, starring Kim Nam-gil (The Fiery Priest) as a cop who teams up with an underground arms broker (Call it Love’s Kim Young-kwang) to stop the flow of illegal firearms flooding South Korea’s streets.

The Assassin (BBC First, Singtel TV Ch 308 & BBC Player, July 26)

Freddie Highmore is no stranger to secretive mothers. In The Assassin, a six-part crime thriller from The Tourist creators Harry and Jack Williams, he reunites with his estranged mum (Spooks’ Keeley Hawes) in Greece — only to learn she’s a retired contract killer with old enemies gunning for her. Oh, boy.

Wolf Man (HBO Max, July 26)

After reimagining The Invisible Man as a #MeToo thriller, director Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse tackle Universal monster classic: Wolf Man (last remade in 2010 with Benicio del Toro). Christopher Abbott (Girls) stars as a family man whose life is upended after a werewolf attack. His wife (Julie Garner, soon to be seen in Fantastic Four: First Steps) thinks he’s losing his marbles. But this is more than just a creature feature — it’s a metaphor for mental illness.
