A Shop for Killers, Season 2 (Disney+, July 22)

The assassin thriller returns! Picking up where Season 1 left off (two years ago!), Lee Dong-wook’s online weapons dealer Jeong Jin-man is back from the dead, but it’s his niece Ji-an (Kim Hye-jun) who’s running the show now. But mercenary consortium Babylon still wants them dead! This time, they’re recruiting outside help…from Japan, in the form of Masaki Okada (Drive My Car) and Hyunri (Pachinko).

72 Hours (Netflix, July 24)

Until the next Jumanji movie drops and gives us a reason to catch Kevin Hart in the cinemas (ETA: December), here’s another (potential) Netflix second-screen slop. He plays a 40-year-old exec trying to reboot his career by hanging out with a group of 20-somethings on a wild three-day bachelor party — after he’s mistakenly added to their group chat.

The Dink (Apple TV, July 24)

Finally, pickleball gets its own forkin’ movie! Jake Johnson (New Girl) plays a washed-up tennis pro who picks up pickleball to save a suburban country club from shuttering — and hopefully gain the respect from his ball-busting father (Ed Harris). Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Strays) and produced by Ben Stiller, this comedy also stars Patton Oswalt, Chris Parnell, Mary Steenburgen, and Stiller himself.

Stuart Fails to Save The Universe (HBO Max, July 24)

Unlike the other The Big Bang Theory spin-offs (Young Sheldon, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage), this one is going full sci-fi. Kevin Sussman reprises his role as comic bookstore owner Stuart Bloom. This time, he and his nerdy pals are trapped in a post-apocalyptic Pasadena surrounded by giant bugs, wormholes, and zombies. And who better to save Stuart than Stuart himself, from an alternate universe — using a device invented by Sheldon, Leonard and Howard… do those names ring a bell?

1941 (Netflix, July 24)

If I ever get to interview Steven Spielberg (can someone at Amblin return my call?), I’d pick his brain about this rare curio in his illustrious filmography — a comedy. After the back-to-back successes of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg, then only 32, could do anything he wanted. And he chose 1941, about a botched Japanese attack on LA during WWII, days after the Pearl Harbor attack. Did I mention that it’s a broad goofball comedy written by soon-to-be Back to the Future creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, and John Milius? Think Looney Tunes meets The Three Stooges, but with the Axis powers. It’s way crazier than it sounds. After more than four decades, there are still some moments where you go: Are we supposed to laugh at this? (But you can’t help it — John Belushi is in this; he’s the Tasmanian Devil and Peter Griffin rolled into one.) How the hell did Spielberg convince two studios to back this wrecking ball of chaos? Its production history is the stuff of legends, a classic case of the-inmates-running-the-asylum situation. Years later, Spielberg admitted he wasn’t the right guy for the job. One thing’s for sure: he wasn’t wired to do comedy. He was more on target with his next gig: Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the 1990s, a two-and-a-half-hour director’s cut was released on home video. Netflix is streaming the shorter two-hour version.
