Another week, another murder. Gao Mei Gui, Zong Zijie and Juin Teh join Jeremy Chan to crack the case of ‘A Fruitful Crime’.

Find me A Singaporean (mewatch & Channel 8, Aug 21, 8pm)

Sharon Au (yes, still her...) checks in with pal, concert pianist and Steinway Artist recipient Wang Congyu, on the beautiful Réunion Island — part of the Mascarene Islands, a French overseas department and region in the western Indian Ocean. Sweet life, hor?

Devo (Netflix, Aug 19)

Documentary about the legendary American New Wave band Devo — from their early days in Akron, Ohio (what’s up with those energy domes?) to their mainstream success with the 1980 smash Whip It and their enduring pop culture legacy. These days, lead singer and keyboardist Mark Mothersbaugh is best known for his film and TV scores, including collabs with Wes Anderson, Rugrats, The Lego Movie, and, more recently, Interior Chinatown.

The Map That Leads to You (Prime Video, Aug 20)

YA romance alert! Lasse Hallström (Dear John) directs this adaptation of JP Monninger’s novel, starring Madelyn Cline (I Know What You Did Last Summer) as a young woman who meets a “magnetic and mysterious” Jack (played by Riverdale’s KJ Apa) during a European vacay. And guess what? Per the logline: “As their connection deepens, secrets, life choices, and hidden truths will test their bond…” Hope she brought protection.

Eenie Meanie (Disney+, Aug 22)

Ryan Gosling. Nicolas Cage. Ethan Hawke. Ansel Elgort. They’ve all played getaway drivers. It’s been a sausage club — until now. Let’s give a warm welcome to Samara Weaving! Here, she’s a former wheelman — or is it wheelwoman… wheelperson? — coerced by an old associate (Andy Garcia) to pull off a heist to save her ex (Karl Glusman). Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Peacemaker, Season 2 (HBO Max, Aug 22)

Remember that interdimensional portal thingy Lex Luthor came up with in Superman? Well, it plays a pivotal part in Season 2, which finds John Cena’s Peacemaker fleeing to an alternate universe after being rejected by Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt — where he runs into all kinds of trouble (hello, Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo) that inevitably follows. Besides that, expect “lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman,” DC Studios co-president James Gunn teased.

Aema (Netflix, Aug 22)

This six-part K-drama, set in the 1980s, goes behind the scenes of South Korea’s first mainstream erotic film. Lee Hanee (Extreme Job) stars as an A-list actress who bails on the titular project but, thanks to a contractual loophole, is forced to stay on as a supporting player — while the lead role goes to a newcomer (Bang Hyo-rin). You had me at erotic. (Hey, Eric Khoo, let’s revive the Rose Chan biopic!)

Love Hurts (HBO Max, Aug 23)

Post-Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Oscar win, Ke Huy Quan lands his first leading role in this action-comedy from the John Wick producers. He plays a former gangster who’s turned over a new leaf as a realtor — until an old associate (West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose) — yes, we’re sensing a pattern here — resurfaces, forcing him to unleash his fists (and kicks) of fury. Also starring Daniel Wu as Ke’s boba tea–obsessed brother and Goonies alum Sean Astin.

Anchovy Physical Camp (Disney+, Aug 22)

Disney+ is launching a line-up of Korean variety shows (because we all need a respite from reality) this weekend, starting with a series where South Korea’s less-active celebs tackle a gauntlet of fitness obstacles — or, as some folks would call it, “my last in-camp IPPT.” Also on the menu: 60 Minutes of Love (Aug 23), with Running Man’s Ji Ye-eun searching for romance in the speed-dating circuit; Belly Showdown (Aug 24), where six personalities compete in high-calorie food challenges (their colonoscopies should be even more interesting, yes?); YOO Got a Minute? (Aug 25), which sees Yoo Byung-jae uncovering celebs’ bizarre spending habits and grilling them with even more bizarre questions (which they have to answer with a straight face); and Chef’s Go-To (Aug 26), where famous Korean chefs reveal their favourite back-alley culinary pleasures.
