What to Watch This Week: Apr 14-20, 2025
Stranger Things returns... as a play.

The Last of Us, Season 2 (Max, Apr 14)
The sophomore season of the Emmy-winning post-apocalyptic (coming soon to our real world, yes?) drama — based on the video game franchise of the same name — picks up five years after the events of the first season. Per official synopsis: “Joel (Pedro Pascal) and [his protégé] Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.” Sounds cheery. The show’s new cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Danny Ramirez, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Wright.

Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow (Netflix, Apr 15)

Superman Day (Max, Apr 18)
Apr 18 is Superman Day (yes, it’s a thing). What better way to celebrate the DC icon's birthday than to binge-watch his movies and TV shows, animated and live-action over the decades. Our choice pick: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, the heartbreaking and inspiring documentary that reminds us that not all heroes wear capes.
Into the Congo with Ben Fogle (BBC Earth, StarHub Channel 407/Singtel Ch 203, 9.55pm; BBC Player, Apr 16)
Three-part docu-series where the fearless adventure travels deep into Congo’s remote and stunning rainforests, where he immerses himself with native tribes (and some gorillas) and discover how ancient ways of life are still thriving in the ‘Beating Heart of Africa’.

Government Cheese (Apple TV+, Apr 16)
Apple TV+’s latest is a surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley, starring David Oyelowo (Silo) as an ex-con trying to turn over with a new leaf as an inventor — of a self-sharpening power drill — but his checkered past soon catches up with him and throws a spanner in the works for his plans. But with a little divine intervention, he manages to overcome the obstacles.

Companion (Max, Apr 20)
Missed this thriller during its theatrical run over the CNY period? Can’t they blame you. The distributor hardly promoted it; it felt like a catch-and-release deal. Then again, what do I know? Anyhoo, Jack Quaid plays a seemingly nice bloke who invites his f***-bot (Heretic’s Sophie Thatcher) to join his pals for a weekend getaway in a remote cabin. But the droid's master has more than sex in mind. Think Ex Machina but with more twists.
