The Unholy Review: Jeffrey Dean Morgan Tackles The Devil In Disguise In Religious Horror Movie

The Unholy (NC16)

Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Cricket Brown, William Sadler

Directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos

This Sam Rami-produced horror flick is a rare bird that appeals to the secular crowd as well as faith-based moviegoers. The Walking Dead baddie Jeffrey Dean Morgan cranks up his roguish charm to industrial strength as a discredited journo-turned-sleazy-stringer-for-hire reporting on a mute teenager (Cricket Brown) who can perform miracles. The townsfolk believe she is the Virgin Mary incarnate but unbeknownst to them, her gifts are actually the work of a demon (also named Mary!). It’s a moody ‘beware of false prophets in sheep’s clothing’ cautionary tale with first-time helmer Evan Spiliotopoulos serving up some effective, if a little rote, chills. (3/5 stars)
