Denis Villeneuve’ highly anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert seminal 1965 novel Dune finally dropped yesterday and judging from the footage, there’s no way we’re not going to watch it in a cinema.

Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the scion of the noble House of Atreides embroiled in a power struggle over the control of the barren desert planet Arrakis — aka Dune — the only place in the galaxy where a mind-altering spice exists.

Herbert’s 900-page tome was previously made into a movie by David Lynch in 1984, starring Kyle MacLachlan, and a TV mini-series in 2000. In order to do justice to the book, Villeneuve said he needed to make not one, but two movies.

“The story is so rich and complex that, in order to be faithful to the book, we’ll need to make at least two movies,” said Villeneuve who grew up reading the book. “That was a deal right at the start.”

But cinematographer Greig Fraser assured that the first movie will feel like a standalone. “It’s a fully formed story in itself with places to go,” he said.

In the trailer — set to composer Hans Zimmer's take on Pink Floyd's 'Eclipse' — not only do viewers catch a glimpse of the scale and ambition of the movie, but also the star-studded cast, which included Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, and Chang Chen.

Everything looks smashing. Let’s hope Dune doesn’t pull a Tenet with it sound mix when it opens in Singapore cinemas on Dec 17.
