Trailer Watch: There’s A Stranger Things Vibe To The New Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The new chapter in the ‘Ghostbusters’-verse is set 30 years after the original movie.

If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! Ghost…who? In the just-released teaser trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, some folks have no idea who the original supernatural fumigators are.

While its predecessors — the 1984 original and 1989 sequel — took place in New York City, the latest chapter in the Ghostbusters-verse takes place in the countryside. The plot goes something like this: “A single mum and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.”

The single mum is played by Carrie Coon (The Sinner) and the kids are portrayed by Captain Marvel’s Mckenna Grace and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. The always-dependable Paul Rudd is in the movie as well, as someone who seems to know a lot about the original Ghostbusters. So who was the kids’ grandfather? The trailer doesn’t say but looking at Grace’s glasses, my guess is that she’s related to Egon Spengler, the character played by the late Harold Ramis.

Directed and co-written by Jason Reitman (Juno), whose father Ivan made the first two Ghostbusters, Afterlife has an Amblin-Spielbergian ’80s feel to it. The casting of Wolfhard, one of stars of the Amblin-esque Stranger Things kinda reinforces that vibe. (By the way, is just me or does Wolfhard look like he’s old enough to front his own ‘80s metal cover band? Even his name sounds like a metal band.)

Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson are reportedly onboard, reprising their roles as Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, respectively. No word on whether Bill Murray will be returning as Peter Venkman. All three did cameo in the lacklustre all-female reboot — starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon — but not as their original characters. That 2016 Paul Feig-directed instalment isn’t connected to Afterlife.

Is Murray going to show up? Who knows? Well, two things are certain: one, the Ecto-1 back in action, and two, Slimer is out in the open again.
