Marvel Studios has released the trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the company’s highly anticipated first movie headlined by an Asian superhero.

The movie — the second entry in the phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Black Widow — sees the titular character(Kim’s Convenience’s Simu Liu), a kung fu master with daddy issues. And the father, Wenwu, is played by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, in his Hollywood debut.

Wenwu, who may or may not be the real name of The Mandarin, the mythical leader of a shadowy organisation called The Ten Rings.

In typical Marvel style, the trailer doesn't say much about the plot (is it set in the pre- or post-Blip?) but one thing is clear: Wenwu has been around for a long time and he wants Shang-Chi to take his place. But junior has something else in mind. And that's where the fighting — including one fanciful Zhang Yimou-esque clash — starts.

Ring leader: Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is having a Wong Kar-Wai moment in 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'.

The Mandarin made his MCU debut in 2013’s Iron Man 3 but that character, played by Ben Kingsley, turned out to be an imposter. The Mandarin was again referenced in All Hail the King, a 14-min ‘side-quel’ available as a bonus feature on the Thor: Dark World Blu-ray.

To mark the teaser trailer launch (and his birthday on Apr 19), Liu also took to social Instagram to share the movie's first teaser poster. He wrote, "Whoever said that you could only RECEIVE presents on your birthday? This is your VERY FIRST LOOK at the teaser poster for Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!

"You know... I never saw myself as the hero of my own story growing up. I struggled to find any Asian characters onscreen, and there were fewer still that made me feel truly proud of my heritage. It's absolutely insane to think that in just over four months, we will have a Marvel Studios movie featuring an almost ENTIRELY Asian cast, each full of rich nuance and dimensionality.

"Shang Chi is more than just a movie — it is a celebration of our culture and a rallying cry for the forgotten, the unseen, and the overlooked. It is a reminder to take up space, to stand tall, and to be unapologetically ourselves.

"(Of course, it's also going to deliver superhero action like you have NEVER. SEEN. BEFORE.)

"Make history with us in theatres on September 3rd!"

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings lands in cinemas here Sep 2.
