Trailer Watch: Netflix’s Reality Drama Singapore Social Looks Like A Crazy Rich Asians Spin-Off No One Asked For

First things first, here’s the show’s official synopsis: “Peer into the lives of young Singaporeans as they defy expectations and traverse the tricky terrain of career, romance and family.”

Among those “young Singaporeans” are Paul Foster, the star of Polo Boys and Working Class; and Singapore Idol alum and former 987FM DJ Tabitha Nauser. The others? I have no idea who they are, but they look like they're from affluent families.

Judging from the trailer dropped last night (Nov 8), their trials and tribulations are captured in a reality-soap opera that’s in the vein of The Hills, Jersey Shore and, oh dear, Keeping up with the Kardashians. (The show is tagged under ‘soaps’, ‘sentimental’ and ‘docuseries”.)

Comments online haven’t been very kind so far. One Netizen, goldwinc, wrote: “Wtf is this? Crazy rich Asian (sic): the reality show?” Elsewhere, jichuya, gripes: “Great. Another show about how singapore is rich and doesnt actually show our culture woohoo.”

Is this Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders-gate all over again? Except this is actually filmed here. Personally, I’ve been looking forward to Singapore’s first original Netflix production for a while, but this is what we got, a frigging docu-opera about rich folks?

Okay, let’s take a chill pill.

To be fair, it’s only a trailer. Maybe there’s more to the show than meets the eye. For all we know, we may end up enjoying it — it could be so bad that it’s good. You know, a guilty pleasure. So save the pitchforks and torches when it premieres on Nov 22, okay?

But you know who’ll really, really love Singapore Social? Mr Brown. He’ll definitely have a field day mocking it. Probably.
