Trailer Watch: Netflix's Ju-On Adaptation Looks Scarier Than The Ju-On Movies

Created by Takashi Shimizu, Ju-On — which also goes by its English name The Grudge — centred on a haunted house and a curse that infects whoever lives there. It started out as two short films in 1998 and later begat 13 features, including a mash-up with another J-horror classic Ringu called Sadako vs Kayako, and four American instalments, with the most recent one, starring John Cho, released in January.

If you’re not a fan, don’t worry, you can start afresh with the Netflix version because it’s an origin story. Hence the title Ju-On: Origins.

Here’s what to expect from the Japanese series, per Netflix’s YouTube page: The J-horror classic franchise Ju-On was actually based on real events that occurred over four decades — and the truth is even more terrifying. Can the people haunted by this house escape from its curse? And what kind of grim incident occurred in this cursed house in the past?

Looking at the just-dropped creepy trailer, this isn’t a series you want to watch after sunset or with young children. One disturbing moment which gives us the heebie-jeebies involves a man holding a grisly baby from Hell.

Will this baby grow up to be that boy with the white-powdered face, one of the iconic images in the franchise? We’ll find out in July.
