Heard of Candyman?

According to urban legend, “if you say his name five times while looking in the mirror, he appears in the reflection and it kills you,” says Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) in the just-released trailer of Candyman, Jordan Peele’s highly-anticipated reimagining of the 1992 horror classic.

Peele told Hollywood Reporter, “[The original Candyman] was one of the few movies that explored any aspect of the black experience in the horror genre in the '90s, when I was growing up.” He added that the movie is an "iconic example of representation in the genre, and a movie that inspired me.”

In the update, directed by Nia DaCosta, Abdul-Mateen plays an artist obsessed with the hook-handed boogeyman, so much so that he incorporates the urban legend in his works, daring gallery visitors to say his name. Needless to say, tragedy befalls on those who utter his name.

Based on Clive Barker’s short story, The Forbidden, the first Candyman starred Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkerly, Vanessa A Williams, and, as the titular serial slayer, Tony Todd, who may or may not turn up in the new movie. (If he does, is he playing a new character or back as Candyman?)

Candyman opens in cinemas Jun 18.
