Hell looks a lot like a variety show.

At least that’s how Mark Lee imagines the nether world in his new movie, Hell Bank Presents Running Ghost, which debuted its trailer on Saturday (Mar 20) on the Golden Horse Award-nominated performer’s Facebook page. The Hongkong-set, Cantonese-language (but dubbed Mandarin here) supernatural rom-com, directed by Lee, is set to release Apr 1.

Wong You Nam (The Midnight After) stars as a bloke who dies and winds up in the hereafter. To return the land of the living, he has to win a reality game show called Running Ghost (is this the afterworld’s Running Man?). To do that, he turns to a teenage psychic (She Remembers, He Forgets’ Cecilia So) for help. And guess what happens next?

Making his mark: Director Mark Lee on location in Hongkong, filming 'Hell Bank Presents: Running Ghost'.

Running Ghost — which also stars Jerry Lamb, Venus Wong and Zeno Koo — made its world premiere at last year’s New York Asian Film Festival. It’s Lee’s third directorial effort; he made his debut with 2011’s The Ghosts Must Be Crazy (co-helmed with Boris Boo), followed by 2019’s Make It Big Big.
