Gael Garcia Bernal is taking his family on a beach holiday… in Hell. Or a version of it.

In the trailer for M Night Shyamalan’s new supernatural thriller Old, a group of travellers — including Bernal, Rufus Sewell and Ken Leung — are stranded on a beach where everyone is ageing rapidly. Hence the title. Can they solve the mystery before Father Time catches up on them? Is there going to be a twist ending?

After working on Apple TV+’s psychological horror series Servant for two seasons, Old marks Shyamalan’s return to the big screen after 2019’s Glass, the sequel to Split and Unbreakable. The movie is adapted from a 2010 graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peters.

Shyamalan, who filmed most of his movies in and around his hometown of Philadelphia, shot Old in the Dominican Republic from September to November last year.

In a recent tweet, the 50-year-old Oscar/Razzie-nominated filmmakers hinted that Old is going to be a bit different from his previous movies.

“I love the process of editing & screening & carving a new language into a genre film," he wrote. "It’s what wakes me up. The ‘wow, I’ve never felt that before’ feeling when watching something.”

Let's hope it's the same for the audience when Old opens in Singapore cinemas July 22.
