Trailer Watch: Chris Rock, Samuel L Jackson Reboot The Saw Franchise In Spiral

For a while, Chris Rock’s reboot of the iconic horror movie Saw was simply known as the Untitled Saw Project. Now, it has a name: Spiral. Fans of the gory franchise will get the reference.

Star and executive producer Rock (who also came up with the story) and Max Minghella play cops looking into a series of grisly murders. Samuel J Jackson co-stars as another detective investigating the case.

Are the crimes the handiwork of the old Jigsaw (previously played by Tobin Bell) or a new one? (Bell’s Jigsaw died in Saw III, but still turned up in subsequent sequels via flashbacks) What kind of bone-cracking, blood-spilling, flesh-dissolving booby traps does he (or she?) have in store in time? Welcome back to the House of Pain!

In the just-dropped trailer, we see Rock’s character chained up in a dark and dingy room, holding a hacksaw. The scene is similar to the one in James Wan's original Saw where Cary Elwes’ character has to sever his own foot to escape. In the Saw universe, if Jigsaw singles you out, then that means you’ve been a bad, bad boy. He’s the karma police.

Spiral is the ninth entry in the series, which began in 2004. A new Saw movie was released every Halloween between 2005 and 2010, before it took a seven-year break and returned in 2017 with Jigsaw. Spiral is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman who helmed Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV.

Spiral opens in cinemas May 28.
