Trailer Watch: Charlize Theron Is Armed And Dangerous As Immortal Warrior in The Old Guard

The Netflix action flicks drops July 10.

Where are those summer action movies when we need them? With Hollywood studios delaying their tent-pole releases and cinemas closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic (our halls have been shut since Mar 27 and looking at the government’s three-phased post-Circuit Breaker strategy, it might be a while before they return).

This is where the streaming services step in to keep the much-needed stay-at-home adrenaline pumping. In April, Netflix served up the Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction and now it has The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron, ready for some high intensity on-screening bruising (FYI: Apple TV+ has rights to Tom Hanks’ WWII epic Greyhound, but that’s another story for another time.)

In the just-released trailer for The Old Guard, Theron plays Andy, the leader of a covert (is there any other kind?) group of mercenaries. They aren’t your typical mercs — they’re immortals! Holy Connor MacLeod!

Are they the good guys or the bad guys? “Depends on the century,” one can’t-be-killed soldier of fortune replies. Mostly, they do good. “Throughout history, we’ve protected this world, fighting in the shadows. And once in a while they have a recruitment drive. Enter newcomer Kiki Layne as a potential candidate. Together they go up against Chiwetel Ejiofor's resident evil who wants the mercs' DNA. Or something like that.

Theron is no stranger to badass brawls (see Aeon Flux, Atomic Blonde, Mad Max: Fury Road), and the trailer gets to show off her doing lots of kicks and punches and shooting hot-lead.

The R21-rated movie, based on a graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewoo. It also stars Matthias Schoenaerts and Veronica Ngo.
