James Wan, the director of Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, is in the mood to scare you silly with his latest fright-fest, Malignant, which dropped its first trailer on Wednesday (July 21).

The Mummy’s Annabelle Wallis stars as Madison, who is paralysed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

Wan 44, took to social media to share the news of the trailer launch. “I don’t quite know how to describe this one, except I wanted to take this opportunity (in between my two big, fishy films) to do something smaller and different,” the Malaysian-born Australian helmer wrote, referring to 2019’s Aquaman and its now-in-production sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

He continued, “A genre-bender/blender — that harks back to my gritty, indie root[s]. It’s an original story, but inspired by my love for Bava, Argento, De Palma, Cronenberg… and the kind of ‘80s horror/thrillers you would discover on the back shelves of video-stores!”

Malignant also marks the US feature acting debut of George Young, who’s best known here for his appearances on Mediacorp’s
The Pupil and Mata Mata, as well as the host of The Million Dollar Drop.

The lawyer-turned-actor, who’s married to Taiwanese-American host/actress Janet Hsieh, made his American TV debut on the 2016 pandemic series Containment. It’s been previously reported that Young, 41, is the male lead in Malignant.

To mark the trailer release, Young shared a video on Instagram where he tried — and failed — to convince his four-year-old son, Egan, that he is on the movie’s poster artwork. (Nice try.) Young and Hsieh have a second son who was born in February.

Also in Malignant are familiar faces from the Conjuring films and its spin-offs: McKenna Grace (Annabelle Comes Home), Patricia Velasquez (The Curse of la Llorona), and Ingrid Bisu (The Nun, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It). The latter is also Wan's wife and shares a ‘Story By’ credit with him on Malignant.

Malignant opens in Singapore cinemas on Sept 9.
