With less than two months away from its final descent to cinemas — on May 26 — Top Gun: Maverick has released a new trailer, this time featuring the return of Val Kilmer, one of the stars of the 1986 original film.

In the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, Tom Cruise reprises the role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, who’s transferred to the titular aerial combat school to be an instructor.

Turns out, according to the new footage, Maverick got the gig at the request of his one-time rival Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, now a Navy admiral. (We only see Iceman in a photo frame...if that's the extent of Kilmer's appearance, I am going to be so pissed off.)

The trailer also shows tension between Maverick and Miles Teller’s Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, a pilot trainee and the son of Maverick’s late Radar Intercept Officer and best bud, Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards, who’s currently to the go-to actor to play Wall Street bankers — Inventing Anna and WeCrashed).

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who worked with Cruise on Oblivion, Top Gun: Maverick also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powel, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Monica Barbaro, and Ed Harris.

The movie is to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, before its international rollout; it opens in Singapore on May 26, a day before its US release. The French film festival, which runs from May 17 to 28, will also include a career retrospective, and an in-person conversation on stage.
