In the same week Blumhouse is launching Halloween Kills (Oct 15 in the US; Oct 28 in Singapore), the horror shingle drops the trailer for its next spin-tingling offering, The Black Phone.
The Black Phone follows Finney Shaw (newcomer Mason Thames), a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer (Ethan Hawke in full-on evil mode) and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use.
When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
The movie marks the return of writer-director Scott Derrickson to R-rated territory after a tour in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2016’s Doctor Strange. Derrickson previously worked with Hawke on 2012’s Sinister, another Blumhouse production.
The Black Phone made its world premiere last month at Fantastic Fest where it scored enthusiastic reviews. It was also a buzzy title showcased at the CinemaCon in August. Watch the trailer here:
The Black Phone opens in Singapore cinemas on Jan 27, 2022.
