Netflix has announced that the Korean thriller series Squid Game will return on Dec 26 for a highly anticipated second season, and that a third and final season is also in the works.

The first season of the drama about the elaborate world of a high-stakes game aired in 2021 and became a global smash hit, setting new viewing records for the streaming platform.

Lead actor Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian to win the Emmy in 2022 for best drama series actor, which director Hwang Dong-hyuk picked up an Emmy for best drama series directing.

In a letter to fans, Huang, who is also Squid Game’s executive producer and writer, penned his thoughts about an impending new season.

“It's been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” he shared. “On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, 'Wow, I can't believe I'm back in the world of Squid Game.' It almost felt surreal.”

He also announced that Season 3 would be dropping in 2025 and mark the end of the series.

Game enough: Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shares an announcement to his fans.

So, what will happen in Season 2? Set three years after Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, emerged victorious, he’s still on a quest to hunt down the people behind the game. Funding his search with his earnings, Gi-hun searches for the man in a suit playing ddakji in the subway. But, he soon learns that in order to end the game, he will have to re-enter it.

Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo reprise their roles from Season 1 and will be joined by new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri and Won Ji-an.

Sharing more details about the plot, Hwang wrote: “Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

He mused: “I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well… We'll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride."
