Trailer Watch: Chris Hemsworth Plays A Different Kind Of God In Netflix Thriller Spiderhead
It’s a psychological thriller from the director of Top Gun: Maverick.
Chris Hemsworth takes a break from Marvel duties to portray a mad scientist who believes the ends justifies the means. Come to think of it, he’s still playing God, right?
Netflix has just dropped the trailer for Spiderhead, out June 17, with Hemsworth as Steve Abnesti, a brilliant visionary (a Steve Jobs with bigger biceps?) but morally flexible scientist who runs a state-of-the-art penitentiary where the inmates are experimented with behaviour-altering drugs.
“Our work will save lives,” Abnesti asserts. Cool, but how much will this cure cost humanity? This is where two inmates (Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett) enter the picture: when they form a connection, their bond threatens to derail the project.
Adapted from George Saunder’s The New Yorker short story by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Spiderhead is directed by Joseph Kosinski, the same guy behind Oblivion and next week’s Top Gun: Maverick.
Shot in Australia’s Gold Coast in Nov 2020-Jan 2021, Spiderhead also stars Mad Max: Fury Road’s Nathan Jones, Top Gun: Maverick alum Charles Parnell and The Wolverine’s Tess Haubrich.
