Trailer Watch: Samuel L Jackson Takes On The Skrulls In Secret Invasion

Nick Fury is back to kick ass.

Marvel Studios has dropped a new trailer for its upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L Jackson as the one-eyed badass and former Avengers assembler, Nick Fury. The six-part limited series is set to premiere on June 21.

This trailer launch is exactly what Marvel needs right now — a welcome distraction from its recent pile-up of PR woes, from the underperformance of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to the arrest of Jonathan Majors, one of the Quantumania stars, on charges of assault and harassment, to the dismissal of top Marvel exec Victoria Alfonso.

Hyped as an espionage thriller, Secret Invasion sees Fury back on Earth after taking some time off in space (per post-credits sequence in Spider-Man: Far From Home) to do hell knows what, but whatever it is, it’s connected to his current mission: to thwart a global takeover by the Skrulls, an alien race of shape-shifters.

Jackson will be joined by other familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, aka War Machine, Martin Freeman as Everett K Ross, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos.

New MCU players include Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Judging from the trailer, Ben-Adir, is the resident baddie, not someone to be trifled with. 

Secret Invasion is the third instalment in Marvel’s Phase 5 line-up, which kicked off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February, to be followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May, Season 2 of Loki (undated), and The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel, in November.

Jackson is no stranger to the Marvel TV world; he guested as Fury in the Season 1 episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, ‘Beginning of the End’. Secret Invasion is Jackson’s second starring role in a TV series; the first was last year’s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.
