Branagh does horror! Sorta, kinda. His third tour as Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot sees the desserts-loving Belgian sleuth with the Wi-Fi-deflecting handlebar stache lured out of retirement to debunk a medium (Michelle Yeoh) in the eponymous Italian city. You know the drill: someone croaks (rather gruesomely) and Poirot rounds up the suspects, including Tina Fey’s quippy novelist… and a restive spectre that allegedly resides in the decrepit palazzo (meticulously recreated in London’s Pinewood Studios). But the person who has to endure the ordeal of cross-examination the most is perhaps the great detective himself. Can a man of science and logic and a militant agnostic subscribe to the paranormal? There are just some mysteries Poirot can’t solve. But the movie tries to have it both ways, with mixed results. (3/5 stars) out in cinemas
