Trailer Watch: Michelle Yeoh Channels Spirits In Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting In Venice

Michelle Yeoh, sorry, Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh is tormented by spirits in Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting In Venice.

The last time we saw Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot (Branagh) in Death on the Nile, he shaved off his handlebar moustache.

Well, good news, facial hair lovers, he’s grown it back for his latest adventure, this time set in post-World War II Venice. There, a retired Poirot is invited to séance, run by a medium played by Yeoh, sporting skunk-streak hair.  

Whoever invited Poirot should know better: whenever he goes, death follows. True enough, one of the guests drops dead. Is this work of a spectre or someone of flesh and blood? The former detective will find out.

Branagh’s latest Agatha Christie adaptation — following 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and last year’s Death on the Nile — is based on the author’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party. This is the first time the book is made into a movie; it was previously adapted for TV and radio.

Branagh is again the director. The stellar ensemble also includes Tina Fey, Jude Hill Kelly Reilly, and Jamie Dornan.

Since the film deals with the supernatural (ish), expect a creepy, menacing atmosphere a la The Conjuring. Doesn’t the Zoetrope evoke nightmares of The Conjuring 2?

How about that jump-scare moment where Poirot is startled by a ghost in the mirror?

“Tonight, we are all afraid,” says Poirot in the trailer. “We cannot hide from our ghosts. Whether they are real or not.”
