Remember how exciting the first movie was? The threequel is the opposite of that.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (PG13)

Starring Dylan O’Brien, Lee Ki Hong, Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Directed by Wes Ball

I can’t for the life of me recall much about the previous Maze Runner movie, The Scorch Trials. I know it has a lot of running (duh), and, obviously, Dylan O’Brien’s designated saviour Thomas manages to live through it, so that he can do more running and find a cure for a zombie plague that’s killing the planet.

And while there’s plenty of wall-to-wall action, the threequel is frustratingly light on awe and excitement — it’s just a by-the-numbers spectacle that’s loud, hollow, clunky, and 30 minutes past its bedtime. If anything, it’s little poignant moments involving Thomas’ bromance with his pals that resonate more. As a vehicle for O'Brien's budding badassery, though, I'm happy to just stick with American Assassin. (**1/2)
