Marvel Studios has dropped the first trailer for The Marvels, the follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson.

Per the official synopsis, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe.

If this is all very confusing to you, it means you haven’t been kept up to date with the MCU happenings in the Disney+ series WandaVision and Ms Marvel. And since Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and is in this one as well, we have to ask: is this really Nick Fury or another Skrull impersonating him? Hard to say. Maybe we’ll have more deets when Secret Invasion is out on June 21.

The teaser — set to Beastie Boys’ ‘Intergalactic’ on the soundtrack — promises the return of familiar characters from Captain Marvel (Goose!) and Ms Marvel , as well as new ones played by Itaewon Class’ Park Seo-Joon (netizens are speculating that he’s either Prince Yan, aka Captain Marvel’s husband or Noh-Varr, a Kree soldier) and Zawe Ashton, who looks like the film’s chief villain. (FYI: Ashton has a Loki connection — she’s Tom Hiddleston’s fiancée.)

Elsewhere, expect a healthy dose of body-swapping humour and… a Bollywood dance number? (Larson is no stranger to musicals; run a Google search on Basmati Blues.)

Directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), The Marvels opens in cinemas here on Nov 9. Watch the trailer here:
