Marvel’s Eternals Set To Launch On Disney+ On Jan 12

Good news for parents who couldn’t watch Marvel Studios’ Eternals in Singapore cinemas with their kids back in November because the movie was rated 18: it will start streaming on Disney+ on January 12. (It’s ‘free’ – you don’t have to pay extra, like what you do for Premier Access titles.)

Directed by Nomadland’s Oscar-winning Chloe Zhao, Eternals follows a group of god-like superheroes who have lived on Earth for more than 7,000 years. It stars Angelia Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Don Lee, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan and Lauren Ridloff.

Eternals is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe instalment to feature a deaf-mute superhero, a musical sequence, and an openly gay superhero. The latter is the reason why it received an M18 rating from the classification body IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority).

Eternals is rated PG-13 in the US for “fantasy violence and action, some language and brief sexuality”; per the Internet Movie Database, most countries allowed the movie to be seen by young teens aged 12-16.

Disney+ subscribers can watch Eternals either in its original theatrical aspect ratio or IMAX Enhanced. The latter viewing mode offers an expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1. In English, it means the viewers get more picture information — about 26 per cent more — than what they would normally get from a widescreen movie with a 2.39 aspect ratio.

There are currently 13 MCU titles — including Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Doctor Strange —  with this immersive option.

Since its theatrical release in early November, Eternals has made close to US$397 million (S$542 mil) worldwide on a reported US$200 million budget. The movie also has the distinction of being the MCU entry with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of 47 per cent, beating previous title holder Thor: The Dark World’s 66 per cent.
