'Love, Simon' Is A John Hughesy Coming Out, Coming-Of-Age Dramedy

Nick Robinson in Love, Simon

Love, Simon (R21)

Starring Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel

Directed by Greg Berlanti

Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson plays the eponymous 17-year-old, a closeted gay who plans to come out when he enrolls in college. But he’s forced to revise the timetable when a leaked love e-mail he wrote to another closeted student threatens to out him against his will. This isn’t the only coming-out coming-of-age movie playing in cinemas; there’s also the prom night virginity pact-themed Blockers. But while that movie draws its DNA from American Pie, Love, Simon, directed by prolific TV producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow), gets its sensibility from John Hughes. It isn’t raunchy but it’s just as (bitter)sweet, funny and heartbreaking. (***1/2)
