Trailer Watch: Oscar Nominee Stephanie Hsu Does Unspeakable Things With Cocaine-Filled Condoms In Crazy Rich Asians Co-Writer Adele Lim’s Raunchy Comedy, Joy Ride

Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Oscar-nominated Stephanie Hsu is on the run from the law — in the movie, Joy Ride.

Joy Ride, which has dropped its first trailer, hails from Adele Lim, the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, who's making her directorial debut.

The comedy, which Lim also co-wrote with Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (Family Guy) and Teresa Hsiao (co-creator of Awkwafina is Nora from Queens), tells the story of Audrey (Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park) who goes on a trip to China with her pals— played by Hsu, Good Trouble’s Sherry Cola, and comedian and writer Sabrina Wu (Doogie Kamealoha, MD) — to search for her biological mother.

Along the way, they get mixed up with all kinds of Hangover-type shenanigans, including one involving cocaine-filled condoms when they cross paths with an amateur drug trafficker (you evil white woman!)

Speaking at the SXSW Film Festival on Friday (Mar 17), where Joy Ride had its world premiere, Malaysian-born Lim said, “the story comes from girlfriends. We get together all the time, we do ridiculous things. But I think as a female minority, we don’t see that part of ourselves on screen very often, particularly for Asian women.

“There’s a history that I won’t get into of being exoticised, fetishised and sexualised, but through a white male point of view. The solution is not to strip away the fun and the sexuality, we wanted to tell a story, but on our terms. It’s a story about friendship that shows that we can be messy and thirsty with problems but from the female gaze.”

The filmed-in-Vancouver movie is co-produced by Seth Rogen (he knows a thing or two about raunchiness too) and also stars Desmond Chiam (Partner Track) and Crazy Rich Asian alums Ronny Chieng and Chris Park.
