Indiana Jones has been recalled from retirement.

Disney has shared the first trailer — as well as the title — for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, upcoming fifth instalment of the Harrison Ford-starring franchise, slated to roll out globally in June 2023.

The trailer opens with footage of fedora-wearing, whip-cracking Indiana Jones — featuring a de-aged Ford — reminiscing the good old days.  “Those days have come and gone,” the expert on the occult and obtainer of rare antiquities intones, now happily (?) teaching archaeology.

“Perhaps…perhaps not,” says John Rhys-Davies, back as Indy’s pal, Sallah, aka the best digger in Egypt, last seen in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

And we’re off to another wild adventure with Indy, this time set in the 1960s during the Space Race between the US and Soviet Russia where he’s pitted against villains played by Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook.

Indy isn’t flying solo: he’s joined by his goddaughter Helena, played by Fleabag’s Emmy-feted Phoebe Waller-Bridge. (Will the movie explain the fate of Indy’s son, Mutt, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?)

The Dial of Destiny is the first Indiana Jones sequel that isn’t directed by Steven Spielberg but he remains as an executive producer. George Lucas, the franchise creator, has taken a back seat too but is reportedly involved in the writer’s room.

James Mangold, who’s best known for Logan and Ford vs Ferrari, does most of the heavy-lifting as writer and director. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann and Shaunette Renee Wilson.

Ford, 80, has stated with The Dial of Destiny, he’s done with the character. “This is it,” he said back in September during the D23 presentation. “I will not fall down for you again. But thank you so much.”

In an interview with Empire, Ford said, “I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey.”

That said, it hasn’t stopped Disney from exploring options to keep the franchise going, including a potential Disney+ series. (The franchise previously spawned The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which ran for two seasons from 1992-1993.)

And that means they’ll be on the lookout for a new Indy. But that’s another story for another time.
