Usher in 2022 with a trip to Hogwarts!

To mark the 20th anniversary of the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone in some territories) — it came out in the US on Nov 16, 2001 — Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson will join director Chris Columbus in a retrospective special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, premiering Jan 1 on HBO Go.

In a statement, HBO says the special will “tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations”. Radcliffe, Grint and Watson will be joined by cast members across all eight Harry Potter movies, including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, and Imelda Staunton.

Interestingly, it’s not known if JK Rowling, whose books the movies are based on, will turn up for the reunion. Last year, she sparked a row over transphobic comments made online which were condemned by the transgender community as well as several Harry Potter actors, notably Radcliffe, Grint and Watson.

The Harry Potter movies grossed about US$7.7 billion (SS$10.45 bil) worldwide. It also spawned theme park rides, a play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the Fantastic Beasts spin-off film series, with the third entry, The Secrets of Dumbledore, slated for release in Apr 2022.

Meanwhile, if you can’t wait till New Year’s Day, catch Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses, premiering on HBO Go on Nov 29. Hosted by Oscar winner Helen Mirren, the four-part will feature celebs competing for their Hogwarts house in teams of three. They’ll go head to head in four epic battles answering Wizarding World trivia questions.
