May is a month of good-byes for fans of long-running TV and movie series. First, there’s Avengers: Endgame. (Okay, technically, that movie opened in end April but the effect didn’t kick in until a week later). Then there’s Game of Thrones (the final episode premieres May 20 on HBO). And now it’s The Big Bang Theory.

After 12 seasons, 279 episodes and a handful of awards, the longest-running multi-camera sitcom — revolving around the lives of a group of nerdy, pop culture-hooked physicists — is coming to an end. The official synopsis for double ep curtain closer, premiering May 17 (Friday), ‘The Change Constant’ and ‘The Stockholm Syndrome’, goes like this:

“Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) await big news; Bernadette (Melissa Raunch) and Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) leave their kids for the first time; Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) try to keep a secret; Sheldon and Amy stick together; Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) makes a new friend; the gang travels together into an uncharted future.”

So what is going to happen? In a Deadline interview, co-creator Chuck Lorre promises an emotional finale. “The finale really plays more as a transition for the characters as an emotional finale as opposed to a big, heavy, plot-driven finale,” he says. “The characters aren’t packing their bags and going off to parts unknown, or getting on a spaceship and going to Mars.”

It looks like it's going to be a teary farewell. If it's any consolation, there's the prequel spin-off Young Sheldon — that show should be around for a while. But that’s another story for another time. Meanwhile, we wonder how the finale will address the following questions…

Catch The Big Bang Theory’s one-hour finale on May 17 (Fri), Warner TV (Singtel TV Ch 306 & StarHub Ch 515), 7.45pm (same day as the US), followed by the season finale of Young Sheldon at 8.35pm.
