Freaky Review: Vince Vaughn Channels His Inner Teen Girl In Enjoyable Body-Switching Horror-Comedy

Freaky (M18)

Starring Kathryn Newton, Vince Vaughn

Directed by Christopher Landon

Freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th in this gleefully gory Blumhouse joint when a masked serial killer (Vince Vaughn) switches bodies with a spunky high schooler (Blockers’ Kathryn Newton). Despite the well-worn territory (high school hijinks, mass murder mayhem), director and co-writer Christopher Landon — who previously spliced Groundhog Day’s DNA into the campus carnage of Happy Death Day (and later a dash of Back to the Future Part II for the sequel) — keeps things lively (and deadly) with a healthy dose meta-humour and a spirited ensemble, with Vaughn drawing big laughs as he channels his inner cheerleader (or rather mascot). And for those seeking blood, the ickily gruesome kills (including one involving a wine bottle, another a table saw) will keep genre fiends gratified. (***)
